Unit Name: Solubility of ionic Compounds
Introduction: Ionic compounds behave very differently in different solvents due to their polar nature. The polarity of the ionic compounds require polar solvents and greater the polarity of the solvent, greater the ability of the compound to dissolve. This unit analyze patterns of solubility of the ionic compounds.
Time: Two weeks, 2 hours everyday
Learning Material: You will be introduced some key concepts for each topic. Which will be followed by video tutorials or some hot-linked resources to learn.
Evaluation:
- Some assessment are online to help you check your understanding. You can retake them as frequent as you want. These assessment will be marked for completion only
- Some assessment require answering questions and submitting them electronically. they will be marked according to the expectations laid down in those worksheets.
- One assessment require you to answer questions in the comments and then comment on other’s answers.
- Activities for each topic worth 9% marks, final assessment worth 10%.
Learning outcomes:
- determine the solubility of a compound in aqueous solution
- describe a saturated solution as an equilibrium system
- determine the concentration of ions in a solution
- determine the relative solubility of a substance, given solubility tables
- apply solubility rules to analyze the composition of solutions
- formulate equilibrium constant expressions for various saturated solutions
- perform calculations involving solubility equilibrium concepts
- devise a method for determining the concentration of a specific ion
