5111 Class…Like To Introduce Myself

Hi all,

Want to introduce myself to the class…some of us are already familiar with each other but there are some new names in the list.

I am currently taking 5111 and 5101…just finishing off the 5151 from the summer, so I am up to my eyeballs in online teaching & learning. Quite exciting stuff. I am excited about everything in my online teaching and learning journey and am looking forward to dedicating time towards learning all about the interesting technologies and how they are being used. You can read some of my background story in my other introduction.

…Creating learning communities, cooperation vs collaboration and designing authentic activities.

My goals for the course are better understand the field of distributed learning and best practices for it’s use. I am really unfamiliar with the field of distributed learning and it’s potential, although I feel fairly confident in learning new technological tools.

I had to look up the difference between distributed learning and online learning…as I really am not comfortable defining it.  I have been looking up distributed learning more and realize it is an instructional model that involves using various information technologies (video or audio conferencing, satellite broadcasting, and Web-based multimedia formats) to help students learn. It is also known as computer-mediated instruction. In this regard, I am interested in areas such as video production that will help people learn computer programs, use the web or their software in their jobs etc. I have been making videos in my job currently to help educate staff of the importance of some new practices etc.

I am quite comfortable in an online environment and using technology but find that I don’t feel as confident as I did before the courses, lol. I am learning so many new technologies that require patience with the learning curve…I guess I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know.

My expectations for this course are to enlighten me to the many possibilities of distributed learning and to find methods of teaching and communicating that I haven’t even imagined yet.

I have been a part of a couple learning communities in my experience and believe they are essential to the learning process. They help you consider other perspectives and to have an opportunity to think of what your learning through someone else’s eyes, rather than just your own. In school I have been part of a couple of different cohorts going through a program as well as in a leadership program. It has been quite helpful through my academic and professional growth. I will continue to seek out learning communities as I feel they bring value to their members.

Regards,

Jo

  1. Nice to ‘meet’ you Jo! You are definitely up to your eyeballs in EDDL! I have to congratulate you on completing a course over the summer and now two more in the same term!

    Cheers

  2. Hi Jo….Though I was in the summer class I really participated very little in blogs as was overwhelmed with other obligations — such as working fulltime — did you just finish your assignment for that ? I hope you haven’t been working on it all this time!
I am looking forward to simplifying and strategizing on good online learning skills and tools this class as it is my last one for the certificate. Looking forward to working with you! Are you in Costa Rica??? ps my email is nina-d@hotmail.com
I am locked out of my blog and have no idea how to contact the teacher.. do you have an email or something? Actually, I am not really that happy with the start to this course — and I would like to discuss that openly in some kind of forum which I am interested in setting up… I hate these blogs — would you be into having a page where we can meet and chat more easily? talk soon, Nina

    • Hi Nina,

Hi Jo….I too was overwhelmed with other obligations this summer (full time work and quitting to move to Costa Rica) as well as a family trip for a wedding to Australia, so I understand where you are coming from.

YES I did you just finish the assignment a couple of weeks ago, but no I wasn’t working on working on it all this time…my problem was that I was working on creating the content for my current work and that was 90% of the time on the project.

Congrats on getting to the last course of the certificate…you rock! Looking forward to working with you on this course as well. I think if we stay tuned, the course will have more discussion forums and ability to communicate / collaborate.

      Cheers,

      Jo

  3. Hi Jo

Glad to hear that someone else is also taking EDDL5101. I am a trades guy and a bit of a techno-phobe. I can make a table saw work but not so sure about this flood of new technology. I too would like to learn about Distributed Learning and how to apply it to my end of the spectrum – training apprentices.

    • Hey Michael,

Where are you teaching / looking to teach? I just took an ISW 100 Course at Selkirk College (instructor skills workshop 100) with a couple of our trades instructors…they were very fun to work with.

      Cheers,

      Jo

  4. Hi Jo

I am teaching Carpentry at Algonquin College in Ottawa. I am having the same difficulty as you – how do you separate the blog from EDDL 5101 fro 5111 so that they are distinct and not intertwined. If you figure it out, let me know.

    • Hi Michael,

The best I could come up with was make a category for each class obviously and then I created pages at the top of my nav for each class – 5151, 5101 and 5111 and you can click on each class to see any of the posts for that class.

Open to other suggestions, that aren’t to onerous in effort. 🙂

      Cheers,

      Jo
